The Diaphanous Pelagic Octopod (Japetella diaphana) trawled from between 1, 500 and 1, 200m depth in the Gulf of Mexico, May 2017. Females have a ring-shaped light organ around their mouths - the light produced by the organ is wavelength specific. This production of light might assist in communication between opposite sexes.
