Salted paper print from an 1854 photograph by the British Photographer Roger Fenton (1819-1869). An identical print, also attributed to Roger Fenton, and titled “The Wharfe and Pool Below the Stridâ€, is in the Gilman Collection in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The Strid is a section of the River Wharfe in Yorkshire, England, which runs past the ruins of Bolton Priory. Fenton is the most celebrated and influential landscape photographer in England during the medium's “golden age†of the 1850's, and is noted as one of the first war photographers for his Crimean War photography in 1855. | |
