NASA human computers receiving award
Katherine Johnson (1918-2020, in wheelchair) and Christine Richie (far right) along with family members of Dorothy Vaughan (1910-2008) and Mary Jackson (1921-2005) receiving the Langley West Computing Unit Group Achievement Award. They were four of the black women who worked in the segregated West Area Computers division of NASA's Langley Research Center as human computers. NASA and it predecessor NACA (the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics) used human computers in aerospace and flight research to transcribe and handle raw data. As technology progressed, both human and electronic computers were used to process and handle data. Photographed at the Virginia Air and Space Center, Virginia, USA, on 1st December 2016.
