Illustration of the Mars Polar Lander in the South Polar region of Mars. This probe launched in January 1999 to study the soil and weather on Mars. The lander had a robot arm (centre) for collecting soil samples for analysis. It also had a camera (grey, above the arm) to photograph the terrain. Data was to be relayed through the black dish at upper right. The probe was powered by its large solar panels (blue). Contact with the spacecraft was lost just before its expected landing on 3rd December 1999. | |
