Alexis Bouvard (1767-1843), French astronomer. Bouvard compiled astronomical tables predicting the orbital locations of Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus. His tables for Jupiter and Saturn proved accurate, but the table for Uranus wasn't. This lead him to hypothesise that there was an eighth planet that was exerting an influence on Uranus. Three years after his death this planet, Neptune, was discovered. Illustration published in 1869. | |
