Cone nebula and Christmas Tree Cluster. This area of sky in the constellation Monoceros is designated NGC 2264. The cone nebula is the dark area at centre right, with its tip pointing towards the centre of the image and the triangular cluster of stars that make up the Christmas Tree Cluster. The brightest star in this cluster is the blue-white supergiant S Monocerotis. Around it is the blue reflection nebula powered by it and the other hot young stars in the cluster. The Fox Fur nebula is seen partially in front of the upper portion of the blue reflection nebula. Captured from Cumeada Observatory, Reguengos de Monsaraz, Portugal. | |
