Hedwig Reicher (1884-1971), German actor and suffragette, dressed as Columbia during the National Woman Suffrage Pageant, Washington DC, USA, on 3rd March 1913. The pageant was held at the end of The Woman Suffrage Procession, the first suffragist parade in Washington DC. The parade took place the day before the inauguration of president Woodrow Wilson. The 19th Amendment to the US Constitution, which granted women the right to vote, was ratified in August 1920 after nearly a century of protest. | |
