Vertical section of the syconium of a fig (Ficus sp). This is multiple and accessory fruit containing vast numbers of small uniovulate flowers. The apex is partially sealed by the ostiole which is fringed by scale-like bracts. Fig wasps enter through the ostiole and due to a process of co-evolution pollination of the flowers is achieved by a fig wasp, the species of which is specific to the species of fig.
