Gloeobacter kilaueensis cyanobacteria (blue-green algae), coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Pair of cells with beaded mucilage. Gloeobacter kilaueensis is a new species of cyanobacteria (Gram-negative) isolated from Volcanoes National Park, Volcano, Hawaii, USA, in 2013. Gloeobacter species are unique among cyanobacteria in not having thylakoid membranes (photosynthetic membranes). The light-harvesting complexes (phycobilisomes) are located on the inside of the plasma membrane where photosynthesis occurs. Gloeobacter produces several pigments, including chlorophyll a, beta-carotene, oscillol diglycoside, and echinenone. Its genome has been sequenced. 2% GA fix. Magnification: x5,860 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres. | |
