Gutenberg, Johannes (Johann) (1398-1468), German goldsmith and inventor examining the first page of what was to be the first edition of a printed Bible, together with the printing operating assistants of the mechanical printing press. He is recognised as one of the pioneers of European printing, and is traditionally credited with the successful invention of printing by movable type and the mechanical press.
