Alan Turing, British mathematician and computer scientist
Alan Turing (1912-1954), British mathematician and pioneering computer scientist. Turing worked at the National Physical Laboratory in the UK, from 1945 to 1947. It was during this period that he worked on the ACE (Automatic Computing Engine), an early computer. Turing, who had worked on code breaking during the Second World War (ENIGMA and COLOSSUS), went on to work on other early computer designs in Manchester. In later years he worked on artificial intelligence, devising the Turing test to decide whether a computer can be thought of as truly 'intelligent'. He also worked on mathematical biology, publishing 'The Chemical Basis of Morphogenesis' in 1952.
