Hydra telescopic spectrograph device focal plane. The focal plane of the WIYN Hydra fibre positioner is shown with a number of fibres deployed. Hydra uses a robot system to place fibre optic units on astronomical objects in the telescope's field of view. These fibres send light to a powerful spectrograph, enabling astronomers to take a large number of spectra simultaneously. Hydra (installed in 1995) and its associated telescopes are operated by the WIYN Consortium, consisting of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Indiana University, Yale University and the National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO).
