Lagoon Nebula, composite image. This giant cloud of gas and dust is a starbirth region. It is around 4000 light years from Earth in the constellation of Sagittarius. The area covered by this image is around 2 light years across. The young hot stars are emitting X-rays, which are seen here in pink as observed by the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The optical (visible light) data (blue and white) is from the Mount Lemmon Sky Center in Arizona. Image published in 2018. For the optical image without the X-ray data, see image C046/3290.
