Newborn baby jaundice phototherapy, illustration. The newborn baby has its eyes protected from the blue light, which is a form of phototherapy being used to treat jaundice. Jaundice is yellow discolouration of the skin and eyes caused by the deposition of excess bilirubin (pigment) in skin tissues. The blue light causes a reaction which breaks down the bilirubin into a harmless form which is then excreted in the urine. | |
