Clostridium difficile bacterial culture in a petri dish. The agar used here is Cycloserine Cefoxitin Fructose Agar (CCFA), which has been inoculated with a Clostridium difficile bacterial culture. The cultures are being viewed under long-wave ultraviolet (UV) light, producing the yellow-green fluorescent glow. The Clostridium difficile bacterium causes pseudomembranous colitis, one of the most common hospital-acquired infections, and antibiotic-associated diarrhoea. Infection can be fatal. Treatment is with antibiotic drugs, although this bacterium has become increasingly resistant to the use of antibiotics. | |
