Earth viewed by Kepler space telescope, with the brightness of Earth creating a saturation bleed across the instrument's sensors, obscuring the Moon. NASA's Kepler Mission was designed to discover Earth-like planets orbiting other stars. Kepler's 0.95-metre diameter photometer scanned stars in the Milky Way, looking for Earth-sized terrestrial planets that transit their star's path. The mission was launched in March 2009. Its initial 3.5 year mission was extended to over 9 years, during which time it surveyed over 500, 000 stars, detecting more than 2600 planets. The mission was named in honour of German astronomer Johannes Kepler. This image was obtained on 10 December 2017.
