Small intestine cancer. Coloured scintigram of a tumour (red,bottom centre) in the small intestine. The right kidney is seen at centre left. This is a carcinoid tumour,a small rare tumour that arises from the mucosa lining of the intestines and secretes the hormone serotonin. The excessive amounts of serotonin can cause flushing,diarrhoea,constriction of the airways and heart disease. Other symptoms of the cancer include abdominal pain and gut obstruction. Treatment is with the surgical removal of the tumour or part of the intestine. A scintigram uses a radioactive tracer that accumulates in tumours. A gamma camera detects the gamma rays emitted by the tracer.
