Skjaldbreidur shield volcano. 1009 metre high Skjaldberidur in south-western Iceland is a classic shield volcano with relatively flat slopes. Such volcanoes form when highly fluid basaltic lava flows erupt. Such lava flows travel further than those of stratovolcano, causing the typical low profile of a shield volcano. | |
