Betelgeuse, raw infrared image from the Very Large Telescope (VLT). This image was obtained with VISIR,the VLT Imager and Spectrometer for mid-InfraRed. This instrument observes in the thermal infrared,so the individual exposures are extremely short and the final image is obtained by combining hundreds or even thousands of individual snapshots obtained at slightly different positions. This technique allows for corrections to image defects caused by the small size of the detector. This image was one of those used to produce a view of the nebula around Betelgeuse. Betelgeuse,a red supergiant,is one of the largest stars currently known, with a radius around 1400 times larger than the Sun's. Betelguese is located around 600 light years from Earth,in the constellation of Orion. Image published in 2014. | |
