Eugen Bleuler (1857-1939), Swiss psychiatrist. Bleuler is most notable for coining the term schizophrenia. Previously, this mental disorder had been known as dementia praecox. This term misleading implied that the condition was a form of dementia that affected young people, when this was by then known not to be true. Bleuler was born near Zurich, studied in Paris, London and Munich, and spent most of his career working at the psychiatric hospital in Zurich, Switzerland, where he was director from 1898. | |
