Raphael (1483-1520), Italian Renaissance painter and architect, fully known as Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino. Raphael, Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci together form the trinity of great masters of the Italian High Renaissance period. Many of Raphael's works are found in the Vatican Palace, where the frescoed Raphael Rooms were the central and largest work of his career. His best known work is 'The School of Athens', also in the Vatican. Illustration published in 1835. | |
