A spacesuit helmet as used by Apollo astronauts on the surface of the Moon in the late 1960s and early 1970s. It shows the protective visor - an ultraviolet-stabilised polycarbonate shield for impact, micrometeoroid and UV protection – in the halfway down position. Above that is a sun visor with a gold coating for protection against light and heat. The helmet also incorporates side visors – a tab is visible at far left. The large tabs allowed astronauts in bulky gloves to adjust the visors easily. The helmet is on display in the Apollo/Saturn V Center at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Florida, USA. | |
