Intrathecal drug delivery. Coloured computed tomography (CT) scan of the torso of a 37-year-old patient with an implanted morphine pump (pain pump, centre right). The pump is used to deliver small doses of morphine directly to the fluid surrounding the spinal cord (the intrathecal space) via a small catheter (a small, soft tube). This pain relief option is effective for patients with chronic, intractable pain, not controlled with high doses of oral medication.
