Giant Ferris wheel, International Exhibition, Chicago, 1893. The event, known as the Columbian Exhibition was held to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Columbus' discovery of America. The 265-foot high wheel designed by George Washington Gale Ferris was the most popular attraction at the exhibition. A 20 minute ride on the wheel cost 50 cents, and the construction cost of $350, 000 was recouped in just 3 weeks. | |
