Titus Salt, British woolstapler and industrialist, c1880. Salt (1803-1876) discovered a method of blending alpaca wool with cotton and silk. He is best remembered as the builder of Saltaire Mill near Bradford, Yorkshire, and the surrounding model company town of Saltaire. Shops, a library and other facilities were provided for the workers, but no public houses as Salt was a teetotaller. From The National Portrait Gallery, Cassell, Petter & Galpin, (London c1880).
