Portrait of Lady Mary Wortley Montagu (1689-1762), 18th century. As wife to the British ambassador to Turkey Lady Mary witnessed the practice of inoculation against smallpox. Pus was taken from a patient with a mild case of the disease and applied to a scratch on an uninfected individual to produce immunity. On return to England she promoted the practice. | |
