A view of Rhodes, 1480 (1882-1884). In 1309 Rhodes came under the control of the Knights Hospitaller, who became known as the Knights of Rhodes. They built strong fortifications on the island, which withstood a siege by the army of the Ottoman Sultan Mehmet II in 1480. It eventually fell to Suleiman the Magnificent in 1522.
