| Gastric proton pump inhibitor,illustration. The gastric proton pump is a hydrogen potassium ATPase enzyme. The pump is able to transport ions against their concentration gradient (from a low to a high concentration) through energy derived from the hydrolysis of ATP (adenosine triphosphate). The purpose of the gastric proton pump is to acidify the contents of the stomach,which in turn activates the protease enzyme pepsin (for protein breakdown). This gastric proton pump is affected by a proton pump inhibitor (PPI,a drug that is designed to reduce this production of stomach acid),as these pumps are good drug targets for the treatment of acid-related diseases. These include gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD),as well as gastric and duodenal ulcers. | |
