Blacksmith lapwing or plover (Anitibyx or Vanellus armatus) stretching its wings. This bird's common name is derived from its loud, clinking alarm call. This is its most frequently heard call, but it remains silent until disturbed. It lives in open landscapes with moist, short grass or sparse bushes, close to the lakes and rivers of Africa south of the equator. It feeds on insects, worms and molluscs. Photographed in the Zimanga private game reserve in, Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa. | |
