Ruptured blood vessel and red blood cells (erythrocytes), scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Blood vessels form part of the circulatory system transporting blood throughout the body. This blood vessel has ruptured allowing the erythrocytes to spill out. Erythrocytes contain the iron rich protein haemoglobin which binds oxygen. Erythrocytes transport oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body and also remove carbon dioxide from the body by transporting it to the lungs where it is then exhaled.
