Viking lander digging on Mars, illustration. The Viking program sent two space probes to Mars, Viking 1 and 2. Each spacecraft consisted of an orbiter and a lander. Viking 1 landed on the surface 20th July 1976, Viking 2 followed on 3rd September 1976. The landers took high-resolution images of the Martian surface and also studied the structure and composition of the atmosphere and surface. | |
