Mars is approximately half the diameter of Earth with a surface area only slightly less than the total area of the Earth's dry land. Mars is less dense than Earth, has about 15% of the Earth's volume and 11% mass, resulting in about 38% of the Earth's surface gravity. The red-orange colour of the Martian surface is caused by iron oxide, or rust. Other colours depend on the minerals present. Mars has a radius of 3358.5 km; the Earth's radius is 6371 km. | |
