Zinc reacts with iodine. Powdered zinc metal (Zn) is added to Lugol's solution (Lugol's iodine), an aqueous solution of iodine (I2) and potassium iodide (KI). Zinc reacts with elemental iodine in the solution: Zn + I2 -> ZnI2. The initial red-brown colour due to iodine gradually fades (over about 30 min with periodic stirring). At the end all iodine is used up and excess zinc is left at the bottom. | |
