Zinc reacts with iodine, 3 of 5. Powdered zinc metal (Zn) is added to Lugol's solution (Lugol's iodine), an aqueous solution of iodine (I2) and potassium iodide (KI). Zinc reacts with elemental iodine in the solution: Zn + I2 -> ZnI2. The initial red-brown colour due to iodine gradually fades (over about 30 min with periodic stirring). At the end all iodine is used up and excess zinc is left at the bottom. | |
