This illustration shows how a multiple myeloma cell (a mature malignant B cell) interacts within the bone marrow microenvironment to insure its survival and proliferation. The cell interacts with bone marrow stromal cells which encourage proliferation, survival, and anti-apoptosis, it interacts with the extracellular matrix to encourage cell adhesion-mediated drug resistance, it initiates neovascularization which is chaotic in structure and leads to leakiness in the abnormal blood vessels, and it simultaneously triggers osteoclasts and osteoblasts to remodel bone which leads to bone destruction and the formation of lytic lesions. | |
