When a protein is damaged or its function is no longer required, it is tagged for degradation by the addition of several ubiquitin marker proteins. One way multiple ubiquitin markers are added is by a condensation reactions between the C-thermical carboxyl group of the first ubiquitin (right) and a Lys residue of the new ubiquitin (left).
