Portugal is a country located mostly on the Iberian Peninsula in southwestern Europe. It is bordered to the west and south by the Atlantic Ocean and to the north and east by Spain. Its territory also includes the Atlantic archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira, both autonomous regions with their own regional governments. Algarvia is a civil parish in the municipality of Nordeste, on the island of Sao Miguel in the Portuguese Azores. Lusitania was an ancient Iberian Roman province located where most of modern Portugal and part of western Spain. Joan Blaeu (1596-1673) was a Dutch cartographer, the son of cartographer Willem Blaeu. In 1635 they published the Atlas Novus (full title: Theatrum orbis terrarum, sive, Atlas novus) in two volumes. The Atlas Maior is the final version of Joan Blaeu's atlas, published in Amsterdam between 1662 and 1672, in Latin, French, Dutch, German and Spanish, containing 594 maps and around 3, 000 pages of text. | |
