From left of right, woman of the Snake tribe, woman of the Cree tribe. Snake Indians is a collective name given to the Northern Paiute, Bannock, and Shoshone Native American tribes. The Cree are one of the largest groups of First Nations in North America, with over 200, 000 members living in Canada. In the United States, this Algonquian-speaking people historically lived from Lake Superior westward. Today, they live mostly in Montana, USA. Karl Bodmer (February 11, 1809, October 30, 1893) was a Swiss printmaker, lithographer, painter, illustrator and hunter. He accompanied the German explorer Prince Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied on his Missouri River expedition. Bodmer was hired as an artist to record images of cities, rivers, towns and peoples they saw along the way, including the many tribes of Native Americans along the Missouri River and in that region. | |
