The dance of the women of the Mandan White Buffalo Cow Society was performed for Bodmer, Prince Maximilian his guests at Fort Clark on December 25, 1833. The White Buffalo Cow Society has historically been the most respected women's society amongst the Mandan and Hidatsa peoples. At certain ceremonial dances, the leader is said to have worn a white buffalo cow hide blanket and danced while holding a bundle of twigs capped with eagle plumes.
