2D illustration detailing the second step of a root canal procedure, in which fillings are inserted into the cleaned tooth canals where the decaying pulp once was. After the tooth canals are filled, posts are then secured over the fillings, and a synthetic crown is usually fitted over the natural tooth for added protection. A root canal is needed when the pulp at the centre of a tooth, which contains the nerve and blood supply, becomes infected. The bacteria kill and replace the pulp and eventually spread into the surrounding tissue, causing inflammation. | |
