The woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) is an extinct species of mammoth that lived during the Pleistocene epoch. This is a section of a tusk imaged in a scanning electron microscope (SEM). This ivory is a good substitute for African Ivory and is often used for jewellery. This specimen was collected from melting permafrost in Alaska. The field of view of this image is 35 um. The SEM magnification was 31, 600x. The red object is an unidentified protozoan that lived in the cracks and tunnels inside the tusk as it was submerged in water for thousands of years. These protozoa are an indication that this is not a sample of Elephant Ivory. | |
