Scanning electron micrograph of cyanobacterium (Anabaena sp.). Cyanobacteria is a phylum of bacteria that derive their energy through photosynthesis. The name cyanobacteria comes from the colour of the bacteria and they are sometimes called blue-green algae. However cyanobacteria are prokaryotes and are not to be confused with algae, which are eukaryotes. Cyanobacteria are responsible for many of the Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) that cause ecological, economic and public health concerns in waterways, through the production of cyanotoxins.
