Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Cortex with florid plaques. Variant Creutzfeldt -Jakob disease (vCJD) is a type of brain disease within the transmissible spongiform encephalopathy family. Symptoms include psychiatric problems, behavioural changes, and painful sensations. There is now strong scientific evidence that the agent responsible for the outbreak of prion disease in cows, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE or 'mad cow' disease), is the same agent responsible for the outbreak of vCJD in humans. Light micrograph with haematoxylin-eosin staining. | |
