Colour enhanced scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the yeast-like fungus Candida albicans, a cause of thrush (candidiasis). This fungus is normally present on human skin and on the mucous membranes of the mouth, respiratory and intestinal tracts, and the vagina. The normal human bacterial microflora will usually prevent an infection taking hold. Antibiotics or a reduced immune response can suppress this effect, causing an infection. Common candidiasis infections in humans include oral thrush, vaginal thrush and nappy rash. Magnification 2500x when printed 15cm. | |
