Iodine reduction by tin. Lugol's solution (Lugol's iodine), an aqueous solution of iodine (I2) and potassium iodide (KI) has a red-brown colour (left vial). Tin(II) sulfate (SnSO4) solution has a pale yellow colour (right vial). When tin(II) sulfate solution is added drop by drop to the iodine solution (middle vial), it progressively becomes colourless, as I2 is reduced to I- and Sn2+ is oxidized to Sn4+: Sn2+ + I2 -> Sn4+ + I-. | |
