Flyeye telescope. Illustration of the automated flyeye telescope being developed by the European Space Agency (ESA) to locate comets and asteroids (one at upper right) that might impact the Earth (near-Earth objects, NEOs). The telescopes would carry out nightly sky surveys as part of a network that would completely scan the sky. The telescope splits the image into 16 smaller subimages (similar to how a fly's eye works). Such telescopes (see C036/0179) provide a very large field of view, about 13 times the diameter of the Moon as seen from the Earth. The telescopes are being constructed by a multinational consortium, and are expected to begin operating around 2019 to 2020. It is now known as NEOSTEL (Near Earth Object Survey TELescope).
