Royal Suspension Chain Pier in Brighton, 1860s. Also known as the Great Chain Bridge, this structure was the first pier in Brighton, UK. Some 350 metres long, it was built in 1823 and was destroyed in a storm in 1896. In the foreground, bathing huts drawn down to the water's edge are being used by swimmers.
