Polarised light micrograph of the leaf of the common, or stinging, nettle (Urtica dioica). The tips of the large stinging hairs, or trichomes, break off when touched and inject a cocktail of histamine, acetylcholine and formic acid. Nettles have been widely used in traditional medicine. They are a source of vitamins and taste like spinach when cooked. Magnification: x27 at 10cm wide. | |
