Polarised light micrograph of a cross-section of the mature wood of the English elm (Ulmus procera). Elm is a deciduous tree which can grow up to 35m and its timber is valued for furniture manufacture. Lines of medullary rays are seen running vertically. Numerous vessels are seen cut transversely, the large vessels at the bottom of the image are of summerwood or earlywood while the somewhat smaller vessels at the top of the image are of autumnwood or latewood.
