Polarised light micrograph of a tangential section of mature wood of Sassafras, referred to as cinnamon wood, ague or sallop. It is an aromatic tree, common throughout the eastern United States, producing sassafras oil and safrole. Originally used in the production of root beer it is now banned by the FDA due to its carcinogenic properties. Many multiseriate rays are evident. Magnification: x68 at 10cm wide. | |
